Roman trousers

Wenlock's back and questioning the use of trousers in the late Roman Army. Perhaps he's overly attached to the knobbly knee contest image of the Early Roman Army, but by at least the 3rd century the Romans were adopting 'barbarous' ideas. Good sources to consult on the subject are:

Roman Miltary Clothing (3)

The last one is just published and my dear partner is now choosing his new season wardrobe. He wants short trousers and leggings; possible. He also wants a semi-circular cloak and I've already told him to naff off on that front! I'm no tailor. He's already got a square cloak which is quite enough ...

As for trousers being up and down over the last 1500 years, Wenlock, I couldn't possibly comment ;-)

Produce all the historical and archaeological evidence you like, m'dear, but even if it's true, that doesn't make it right. It takes knobbly knees to build empires - that's why the British Empire was largely the work of Scotsmen.

What next? Romans in flares? I think we should be told.

I think the Romans must have worn flares in the 360-70s or 460-70s, with various revivals in between.

Historical evidence does make it right! What sort of historian are you, eh? Hmm ... I'm now thinking of the early Roman Army as 'The Ladies from Hell' ;-)

So, can I have my characters from Storm over Hadrian's Wall (~122 AD) have wearing trousers in winter? I know it's no problem for The Charioteer which takes place 408-10 AD.

The trousers made from this fabric are extremely low maintenance compared to trousers made from any other fabric like silk. Cotton trousers are also good looking but are extremely hard to maintain and require a lot of care.

Here this trousers are the definitive item of military surplus clothing that has crossed over from the army surplus marketplace, onto the fashion rails of high street stores and into the closets of the fashion conscious consumer.
